End of Western capitalism!
Anonymous writes "Apr, 04, 2010 08:00 AM - Khaleej Times (United Arab Emirates)
The first
blow came in October 2008, of course, when the recklessness of a
deregulated financial services industry in the US and Britain nearly
threw the globe into a depression. Now, the smug Eurocrats have joined
the arrogant pinstriped set in the Emperors Without Clothes Club.
The
rest of the world has noticed. Zhu Min, deputy governor of the People's
Bank of China, told a conference in Hong Kong last week he viewed
Greece as the tip of a huge fiscally dysfunctional iceberg, one likely
to swallow up European hopes for growth for years to come. Sounding
vaguely Reaganite, he criticised the way governments in the West seem
unable to live within their means, and noted that the United States and
Britain were little better than Greece, Portugal or other weaker EU
economies. "The UK is weak. America itself is weak, because in a two-
to four-year horizon, US debt will climb to 110 per cent [of GDP] and
stay there for a while," he said. "The governments tried to put every
burden from the financial sector onto their own children. Now they find
nobody can save them." Newt Gingrich couldn't have put it more clearly

titan writes "Peak Oil: Bugatti Makes a Car for the Ages
You want to buy a camera? We can pit it against three others with
nearly indistinguishable features, no problem. Blu-ray players? We'll
compile a three-axis matrix that triangulates the perfect combination
of image quality, connected functionality and price.
But if you're
considering the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, we can't do much for
you.
Comparing it to any other car is pointless, because there is nothing
else in its $2.1-million (based on current exchange rates) class.

A bevy of new desktop processors arrives From $87 to $999
titan writes "So far, 2009 has been a year of
renewed competition in desktop processors, as a resurgent AMD has
rolled out portions of its 45nm CPU lineup with reasonable success. For
its part, Intel has responded by dropping prices on its own Core 2
processors to remain competitive, while riding high on the Core i7's
undisputed performance leadership at the top of the market.
Tighter competition means better choices for consumers, but in
technology, it almost always means more choices, as well. That
principle was on ample display last week as AMD introduced several new
products that essentially complete its transition to 45nm technology.
Meanwhile, Intel has countered by quietly freshening up its low-end and
mid-range offerings a bit and trumpeting the release of a new flagship
CPU, the Core i7-975 Extreme.
With these moves, you have, uh, five.. no, four... wait, maybe it's six
different strata of desktop CPUs from which to choose. Not counting the
low-power versions. We have new processors to test that fit into... uh,
I think four of those categories.
Marketing is hard, folks. Especially when you're on the receiving end of it.

EC denies .63bn budget software flaw
The European Commission has strongly refuted "lurid" claims that the computer accounting systems controlling its .63bn budget are open to fraud.
Reports in the Financial Times suggested that the Commission was preparing to scrap its accounting systems for not being "up to the job".
But suggestions that the update was needed because current systems are open to fraud were fiercely denied.

OZ Police seize ATM theft device
Anonymous writes " FRAUD squad detectives yesterday seized a working keycard skimmer, which will allow them for the first time to learn how the new electronic thieving operates.
"This is the first entire skimmer we have found in Australia," said Fraud Squad Inspector Michael Gerondis.
A Randwick woman called police when she noticed an unusual device on an automatic teller machine at Sydney Fish Markets in Pyrmont at 10.30am.
"She thought it was a little suspicious so she got a friend to try to pull the part away, and it came away," Insp Gerondis said.
The discovery was a breakthrough for detectives investigating the theft of more than $300,000 in Sydney through keycard skimming, a new crime imported to Australia by Asian gangs.

Linux apparently more scary than AIDS to Bill Gates
Titan writes "CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME - MOVES RAPIDLY TO INDIA.
In an observant news item posted recently on TheRegister by Thomas C. Greene in Washington who says...
We do hate to rain on a high-profile corporate love-fest, but we have to point out that in addition to the much trumpeted $100 million BillG has donated to India's fight against HIV, he's funding the Microsoft jihad against Linux to the far more impressive tune of $421 million.
BillG's personal $100 million goes to health initiatives over ten years, while $421 million of Microsoft's money goes, over a mere three years, to support MS-friendly development and 'educational' initiatives.
And being a monster MS shareholder himself, a 'Big Win' in India will enrich him personally, perhaps well in excess of the $100 million he's donating to the AIDS problem. Makes you wonder who the real beneficiary of charity is here."

'Here's how you rob banks using Microsoft software'
Titan writes "'...and for my next trick...'
A former hacker has demonstrated how to break through the online defences of internet banks by breaching the security of Microsoft's web server software.
An unidentified Swedish hacker-turned-security-expert showed a Reuters reporter how he could by-pass the security guarding three of Sweden's four biggest banks in a matter of minutes.
