Linux - the other operating system
Anonymous writes "Most people have used some form of either a Windows or Macintosh
operating system (OS) to run their computers, but what's the open
alternative all about?
Some people may have never heard of Linux - and who could blame
them? It can be a bit difficult to digest, with the technical jargon
and relative obscurity compared to the two big systems.
In terms of worldwide usage, it's small fry: according to December
2009 statistics, about 92 per cent of computers use Windows, 5 per cent
use Mac OS and 1 per cent use Linux (source - Ed:- somewhat biased and perhaps inaccurate statistics from Ars technica, make of it what you will).
But those who do use it swear by it for a number of reasons.
I wanted to find out more about Linux, and to explain the main points in terms we can all understand (my explanations will look like this).
Read full article and comments for the whole picture.
Ed.Note:- Any article that attributes Linux's existence solely to Linus Torvalds, and fails to give due credit to the GNU Foundation, for the huge amount of work it did prior to and following Linus's creation of the Kernel (that which brings the operating system together), fails to understand the philosophy behind Open Source software and further shows a lack of understanding for what the GNU/Linux operating system is really all about. Some of the comments correct these inconsistencies.
Microsoft may well have gained the bulk of the desktop user market, by the fact that it created a system which detaches users from an understanding of what a computing system is. As a corporate monopoly, it must be said that its bottom line must not only put the interests of its share-holders above the interests of its customers, but this detachment offers many options to strengthen its control over its users. | WhiteHouse.gov Releases Open Source Code |
Anonymous writes "Seen today on Slashdot...
The White House has released four custom modules for
the Drupal content management system. The modules address scalability, communication, and accessibility for disabled users, and the release is expected to benefit both the Drupal community and the WhiteHouse.gov site as the code is reviewed and improved by the open source community.
Reader "ChiefMonkeyGrinder" adds an opinion piece with a somewhat
envious view from the UK where Open source is treated as something akin to devil-worshipping in some parts of government.
So, the idea that a major project in the government backyard would be based on something as basic as Drupal is pretty far-fetched.
No, this side of the Atlantic would have involved a closed-tender process; a decision made behind closed doors based on proprietary software and we'd be completely in the dark about costs, about delays, and about functionality.

Is Linux Finally Hitting the Mainstream?
Anonymous writes "It seems as though every day more people are tasting some flavor of
Linux for the first time. There are a lot of reasons that cause users
to choose this type of operating system, including the fact that it is
open-source.
Linux is becoming so popular amongst power users (and even
novices) that companies are starting to work harder to make their
products compatible with Linux. Lexmark is a great example of this. All
of their printers and scanners now have the cute little Tux logo
alongside those of Windows and OS X.

Novell ponders "open-source apps store"
titan writes "Novell plans to bring the wealth of open-source software to everyday users through an "open-source apps store".
The vast amount of free
software available to open-source users has long been one of the major
benefits of switching to a Linux distro such as Ubuntu, or openSUSE.
The problem has always been in explaining this to customers reared on a
Windows diet.
However, with the growing popularity of Linux on netbooks and the
public's familiarity with apps stores on smartphones, Novell believes
offering an "open-source apps store" could solve this problem for
vendors. The fruits of this strategy are set to appear in the openSUSE
edition of the Moblin OS. Read full article at PC Pro"

To Linux or not to Linux?
Anonymous writes "Seen this week on ZDNet by Christopher Dawson.
One request that actually made it past the budget gods for FY10 was 60 convertible Classmate PCs
(30 for each of two schools). These will replace aging stationary labs
in the schools, freeing up needed space and allowing for redeployment
of the older computers for individual classroom and student use.
This
leaves me with a question to answer, though: Do I use Windows XP Home
or Edubuntu?
The teachers largely favor Windows. It’s familiar and they’ll have
enough to do learning the new applications and integrating the tablets
in class, let alone learning a new operating system (or so they say).
Yet Intel has assured me that there will be an equivalent software
stack between the two operating systems, I’ve found that our RTI
software runs quite well under Wine, and Edubuntu itself has quite a
body of educational software available in its repositories.

Stallman: "we still have a fight on our hands"
Richard Stallman on the state of GNU, 25 years on Seen recently on techradar.com
25 years after Stallman first set the GNU project in motion, what
have these ideals achieved, and what can we do to ensure the future of
free software? Linux Format spoke to him to find out. While
Linux Torvalds gets most of the plaudits nowadays for the Linux kernel,
it was Stallman who originally posted plans for a new, and free,
operating system. Free had nothing to do with the cost of the operating
system, but with the implicit rights of those who were using the
software to do with it exactly as they pleased. "I launched the
development of the GNU operating system back in 1983 specifically to
make it possible to use a computer without ceding these freedoms and
accepting the dominion of the software's developers," he told us. read full article

Fixing Linux: What's Broken And What To Do About It
ginga writes "
Despite the fact that it's been around since 1991, Linux remains a work
in progress. It's not perfect, nor does anyone pretend it is. The
places where it needs the most immediate improvement are also a matter
of debate: what's crucially important to some is only marginally
important to others.
Still, there's no question that there are key areas where Linux is
lacking -- not just missing individual features, but things that are
actively dysfunctional and which need immediate attention.
This five page mega article, published on Information Week,
runs down several major areas where Linux, as an operating system and as
a platform, needs work, before it can be accepted for corporate use on the desktops of America. To read the full article by Serdar

Titan writes "In an article seen recently on the BBC Blog, by George Wright...
This week, we're really happy to be sharing some work we've commissioned to deliver BBC content (mainly radio shows from the BBC Audio & Music team) on demand for users of GNU/Linux.
In RAD, we've wanted to experiment with non-DRMed content for a while - and managed to assemble some content which was available to access in a number of ways.
One of the complex things about putting content on desktops or OSs (apart from the two closed operating systems) is the number of options available. Free software's all about choice.
