Pirate Party and Philip Nitschke teach seniors to hack filter

GeneralAnonymous writes "AUSTRALIAN NEWS

Pro-euthanasia group Exit International is holding national hacking crash-courses in how to bypass the Federal Government's planned ISP-level Internet content filter with help from the Australian Pirate Party.

The first of eight "Hacking Masterclasses" was held in Chatswood NSW on Thursday last week, and drew about 50 elderly people - some bearing laptops.

Exit International director and controversial Australian physician, Philip Nitschke, created the class to help the elderly access euthanasia-assistance material online, following fears that the Internet filter will block access to the information.

A leaked copy of the filter blacklist revealed Exit International websites, the UK publisher of the Peaceful Pill eHandbook, and three YouTube videos were on the list of banned materials.

Digital economy bill: One clown giveth and the other clown taketh away

GeneralAnonymous writes "Richard Stallman on the UK Digital Economy Bill

MPs are pushing for faster broadband in the digital economy bill – but also planning to restrict what the public can do with it

When I read about Gordon Brown's plan to give the UK more broadband, I couldn't restrain my laughter. Isn't this the same clown now busy circumventing democracy to take away broadband from Britons who already have it? And what good would broadband do them if they're punished for using it (or even being suspected of using it)? Laying cables would be a waste of resources if people are not allowed to use them.

LiquidNet Reveals a Free Website Template Download Project

GeneralRossTodoroff writes "LiquidNet (www.liquidnetlimited.com), the famous Linux-based web hosting services provider, announces that it has recently launched Themza.com - a new online project aimed at offering a wide variety of free templates and web design themes for PHP script-based websites such as blogs, image galleries and content management systems. New skins are being continuously added to the list of the Joomla templates, WordPress, Moodle and 4images themes currently available for download in .zip format to all the users contemplating a new personal or business website and searching for an appropriate template to accommodate its contents, as well as to those simply looking for a fresh new theme to replace their current outdated one.

Users can get acquainted with the layout and the functionalities of each particular skin by examining the demo versions provided or by simply clicking on the respective thumbnail image for a larger view. All they have to do is download the preferred template to their personal computer and then upload it to a website of their own, provided that they have already obtained an up-to-date version of the script the template in question pertains to. Users are also given the opportunity to pick an appropriate package optimized to accommodate the various free themes should they still have not found an adequate hosting service for their open source script-based website or in case they are unable to handle the whole script installation process all by themselves.

 Teachers Need an Open-Source Education.

GeneralIn an article seen recently on Datamation,

Remember back in 2008 when a teacher named "Karen" made a remark about using Linux holding her students back? The idea apparently being that students using Linux must somehow be participating in something that is illegal. Later, apologies ensued despite new wounds on both sides of the issue being created. Seems to me that this is not just individuals in the proprietary software realm who have no idea how open source software works. Apparently the group of misinformation junkies now includes teachers as well.

Free as in freedom, not as in free lunch

Even with the recent growth in adoption with open source software on proprietary platforms, there are still countless people in places of authority who have no idea that there is such as thing as free/open source software (FOSS). And to be completely fair, it is easy to see how a teacher might become confused when they are surrounded by mainstream media talking heads that spend more time trumpeting the threat of "software piracy" than their FOSS alternatives.

NASA warns of 'space Katrina' radiation storm

GeneralIll solar winds blow nobody any good By Lewis Page • Get more from this author Posted in Space, 7th January 2009 09:14 GMT
A study funded by NASA has flagged up yet another terrible hazard for those no longer able to get excited about nuclear war, global pandemics, terrorism, climate change, economic meltdown and asteroid strike. Top space brainboxes say that even if the human race survives all those, there is a serious risk of civilisation being brought crashing to its knees by a sudden high-intensity solar radiation storm.

The new study, carried out for NASA by the US National Academy of Sciences, might tickle the palate of even the most jaded disaster connoisseur. "Whether it is terrestrial catastrophes or extreme space weather incidents, the results can be devastating to modern societies that depend in a myriad of ways on advanced technological systems," says Professor Daniel Baker of Colorado Uni, an expert in atmospheric and space physics who led the report's authors.

Ubuntu Kung Fu - Tips, Tricks, Hints and Hacks.

GeneralLorin Ricker writes "Back in the dark ages of windows-based GUIs, corresponding to my own wandering VMS evangelical days, I became enamored of a series of books jauntily entitled Xxx Annoyances (from O'Reilly & Assocs.), where "Xxx" could be anything from "Windows 95", "Word", "Excel" or nearly piece of software which Microsoft produced. These were, if not the first, certainly among the most successful of the "tips & tricks" books that have become popular and useful to scads of hobbyists, ordinary users, hackers and, yes, even professionals in various IT pursuits. I was attracted, even a bit addicted, to these if only because they offered to try to make some useful sense out of the bewildering design choices, deficiencies and bugs that I'd find rampant in Windows and its application repertory. Then I found Keir Thomas, who has been writing about Linux for more than a decade. His new "tips" book entitled, Ubuntu Kung Fu — Tips & Tools for Exploring Using, and Tuning Linux, and published by Pragmatic Bookshelf, is wonderful. Having only recently wandered into the light of Linux, open source software, and Ubuntu in particular, this book comes as a welcome infusion to my addiction."

Police set to step up hacking of home PCs

GeneralSeen this week on Times Online....
THE Home Office has quietly adopted a new plan to allow police across Britain routinely to hack into people’s personal computers without a warrant. The move, which follows a decision by the European Union’s council of ministers in Brussels, has angered civil liberties groups and opposition MPs. They described it as a sinister extension of the surveillance state which drives “a coach and horses” through privacy laws. The hacking is known as “remote searching”. It allows police or MI5 officers who may be hundreds of miles away to examine covertly the hard drive of someone’s PC at his home, office or hotel room.

Learning and Educating yourself is a Forever Process

GeneralSeen recently on articles base, by Steve Conn

At 44 years of age, I find myself with the desire to learn more than I ever have and with the technology we have today, there is no excuse for lack of knowledge.

It seems as though most people view learning as a period of life from say birth to college and then they are done. Statistically, less then 25% of people ever read a complete book after they graduate from school. I can't believe those figures especially when you research the truly successful people out there, and you realize 95% of them are constantly reading new books, attending workshops or seminars and researching ways to increase their business, better their relationships and increase the impact they have on the world around. Books on dealing with people help in sales, management, leadership or mentoring and running billion dollar companies. Even everyday, run of the mill employees working a mundane job can benefit from books like that.

Windows scores 5 out of top 500 Supercomputer List

GeneralThe bi-annual release of the Top 500 supercomputer list is an opportunity for a flurry of press releases as every company crows about its bragging rights: HP had the most machines on the list, IBM held most of the top spots, Intel chips were in almost 400 of the machines and AMD had the top two spots. A quieter debut, without much fanfare, was the No. 10 spot, featuring the first appearance of a supercomputer from China's Shanghai Supercomputer Center. The Dawning 5000A is a Quad-Core Opteron machine with Infiniband connectors and 12 terabytes of memory, power by Microsoft Windows HPC 2008. That makes for a total of four Windows HPC 2008 systems and one Windows Computer Cluster 2003 machine on the list.

OK, so Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is only at one percent of the operating systems on the list, while Linux is on 389 (77 percent) of the machines, but Microsoft has only recently entered high performance computing (HPC), so it's a start.

A Step Too Far... Big Brother!!

GeneralTitan writes "Seen recently on The Telegraph

Internet black boxes to record every email and website visit.

Internet "black boxes" could be used to record every email and website visit made by computer users in Britain, it has been reported.

Under Government plans to monitor internet traffic, raw data would be collected and stored by the black boxes before being transferred to a giant central database.

The vision was outlined at a meeting between officials from the Home Office and Internet Service Providers earlier this week.

It is further evidence of the Government's desire to have the capability to vet every telephone call, email and internet visit made in the UK, which has already provoked an outcry.
