Learning and Educating yourself is a Forever Process

GeneralSeen recently on articles base, by Steve Conn

At 44 years of age, I find myself with the desire to learn more than I ever have and with the technology we have today, there is no excuse for lack of knowledge.

It seems as though most people view learning as a period of life from say birth to college and then they are done. Statistically, less then 25% of people ever read a complete book after they graduate from school. I can't believe those figures especially when you research the truly successful people out there, and you realize 95% of them are constantly reading new books, attending workshops or seminars and researching ways to increase their business, better their relationships and increase the impact they have on the world around. Books on dealing with people help in sales, management, leadership or mentoring and running billion dollar companies. Even everyday, run of the mill employees working a mundane job can benefit from books like that.

UK interest rates set to hit new low

BusinessSeen on Ireland On-line
04/01/2009 - 12:46:12

Interest rates in Britain are set to hit a record low this week as the Bank of England grapples with a deepening recession.

The Bank's official rate has never fallen below the current 2% in its 315-year history, but experts predict a cut of as much as 1% on Thursday as the UK faces up to its worst year since the early 1990s.

Rate-setters on the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will ponder the latest gloomy data including a new low for mortgage lending in November and a record 16.2% fall in house prices during 2008

Stallman: "we still have a fight on our hands"

Linux, GNU, Open-sourceRichard Stallman on the state of GNU, 25 years on
Seen recently on techradar.com

25 years after Stallman first set the GNU project in motion, what have these ideals achieved, and what can we do to ensure the future of free software? Linux Format spoke to him to find out. While Linux Torvalds gets most of the plaudits nowadays for the Linux kernel, it was Stallman who originally posted plans for a new, and free, operating system. Free had nothing to do with the cost of the operating system, but with the implicit rights of those who were using the software to do with it exactly as they pleased. "I launched the development of the GNU operating system back in 1983 specifically to make it possible to use a computer without ceding these freedoms and accepting the dominion of the software's developers," he told us. read full article

Microsoft's First-Ever Mass Job Cuts To Come in 2009?

Business17% of company's entire workforce, say rumors, may be in jeopardy

With a Q2 earnings report due on the 22nd of January 2009, Microsoft is rumored to be contemplating ringing in the new year with massive job cuts. A posting by Lars-Göran Nilsson on the Fudzilla technology blog and rumor site claims that 15,000 or so of Microsoft's global workforce of 90,000 "are expected to be giving marching orders come January 15th."

Rumors of a round of rare but substantial job cuts have been swirling for weeks now, with Electronista for example reporting before Christmas that substantial reductions "are believed to hint at significant financial difficulty at Microsoft, which had near-flat growth even in the summer, when the economic downturn had yet to fully materialize."

The Perfect Desktop - OpenSUSE 11.1 (GNOME)

Businesstitan writes "Posted by: Philipp Esselbach on Warp2Search: 12/22/2008 11:10 AM
Howtoforge posted a guide about setting up openSUSE 11.1 as desktop

This tutorial shows how you can set up an OpenSUSE 11.1 desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e. that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.

The BBC has worked with Adobe's AIR developer platform to create a desktop download manager for its online on-demand TV service, meaning users can now watch BBC content whether they are on or offline. The beta version is now available to members of the BBC iPlayer Labs testing group with a full rollout expected early next year. Although a download version of iPlayer has been available since its initial beta launch in July 2007, it was compatible only with Windows XP and Vista. A streaming version for Macs and Linux was launched around a year ago.

HP introduced the offering less than a week after IBM made generally available a Linux-desktop package that includes the Ubuntu distribution of the open-source operating system and IBM (NYSE: IBM)'s Lotus email, instant messaging and office productivity applications. IBM is offering to roll out the package on companies' PCs via the vendor's IT services unit.

HP's offering is less ambitious. the company is offering to preload Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop on the HP Compaq dc5850. The package will also include OpenOffice.org, the open-source alternative to Microsoft's Office suite, a Web browser, multimedia tools and e-mail, collaboration and instant messaging software.  Fixing Linux: What's Broken And What To Do About It

Linux, GNU, Open-sourceginga writes "
Despite the fact that it's been around since 1991, Linux remains a work in progress. It's not perfect, nor does anyone pretend it is. The places where it needs the most immediate improvement are also a matter of debate: what's crucially important to some is only marginally important to others. Still, there's no question that there are key areas where Linux is lacking -- not just missing individual features, but things that are actively dysfunctional and which need immediate attention.
This five page mega article, published on Information Week, runs down several major areas where Linux, as an operating system and as a platform, needs work, before it can be accepted for corporate use on the desktops of America. To read the full article by Serdar Yegulalp http://www.informationweek.com/news/software/linux/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=212100714&pgno=1&queryText=&isPrev="

IBM's Pass It Along Applies Social Networking to Knowledge Sharing

Innovations, IdeasIBM has released a new social-networking tool called Pass It Along to help organizations take a more user-friendly, collaborative approach to knowledge sharing. The new technology expands the notion of social networking for employees and learners--and includes advanced features such as learning paths, visual mapping and expertise profiling.

Nearly 22 million workers are set to retire this year in the United States alone, posing a significant challenge for businesses as they look to retain industry expertise and skills. As a result, organizations of all sizes are now looking for new ways to help their workforce more easily share and gain knowledge for competitive advantage. IBM is addressing this issue with Pass It Along, which integrates knowledge management, social networking and Web 2.0 concepts to simplify the way information is shared and consumed by users. The new technology enables users to access, share and rate essential information; categorize information from the Web or an intranet according to interest; and complete learning paths and create learning networks to help facilitate ongoing knowledge sharing.

Windows scores 5 out of top 500 Supercomputer List

GeneralThe bi-annual release of the Top 500 supercomputer list is an opportunity for a flurry of press releases as every company crows about its bragging rights: HP had the most machines on the list, IBM held most of the top spots, Intel chips were in almost 400 of the machines and AMD had the top two spots. A quieter debut, without much fanfare, was the No. 10 spot, featuring the first appearance of a supercomputer from China's Shanghai Supercomputer Center. The Dawning 5000A is a Quad-Core Opteron machine with Infiniband connectors and 12 terabytes of memory, power by Microsoft Windows HPC 2008. That makes for a total of four Windows HPC 2008 systems and one Windows Computer Cluster 2003 machine on the list.

OK, so Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is only at one percent of the operating systems on the list, while Linux is on 389 (77 percent) of the machines, but Microsoft has only recently entered high performance computing (HPC), so it's a start.

Judge issues final judgment in case involving SCO, Novell

Business A federal court judge has issued a final judgment in litigation involving Lindon-based SCO Group Inc. and Novell Inc.

The case began as a "slander of title" lawsuit against Novell, involving questions over ownership of the Unix operating system and UnixWare software copyrights. But Kimball ruled in August 2007 that Novell was the owner. Novell sought revenues that SCO had received from Microsoft Corp., Sun Microsystems Inc. and other Fortune 1000 companies when SCO licensed certain Unix technology to them.

The final-judgment order by U.S. District Judge Dale A. Kimball in Salt Lake City last week reiterates much of the August 2007 order and a July ruling that awarded Novell more than $2.5 million. The final judgment orders the dismissal of certain claims but also allows the parties to appeal the earlier rulings on certain other claims.

The Novell-SCO dispute was an offshoot of another SCO lawsuit, against International Business Machines Corp., filed in 2003. SCO accused IBM of improperly placing proprietary Unix code into Linux, an open-source operating system that competes with Unix.

SCO is in bankruptcy, and the lawsuit against IBM has been stayed because of the bankruptcy.

Internet black boxes to record every email and website visit.

Internet "black boxes" could be used to record every email and website visit made by computer users in Britain, it has been reported.

Under Government plans to monitor internet traffic, raw data would be collected and stored by the black boxes before being transferred to a giant central database.

The vision was outlined at a meeting between officials from the Home Office and Internet Service Providers earlier this week.

It is further evidence of the Government's desire to have the capability to vet every telephone call, email and internet visit made in the UK, which has already provoked an outcry.

Research on BBC content for GNU/Linux

Linux, GNU, Open-sourceTitan writes "In an article seen recently on the BBC Blog, by George Wright...

This week, we're really happy to be sharing some work we've commissioned to deliver BBC content (mainly radio shows from the BBC Audio & Music team) on demand for users of GNU/Linux.

In RAD, we've wanted to experiment with non-DRMed content for a while - and managed to assemble some content which was available to access in a number of ways.

One of the complex things about putting content on desktops or OSs (apart from the two closed operating systems) is the number of options available. Free software's all about choice.

 Virtual Worlds

BusinessTitan writes "Seen recently on Silicon.com...

Not hearing much about virtual worlds these days? They're not dead, says Tim Ferguson - just preparing for the next round.

Virtual worlds such as Second Life have a bright future, according to experts, especially as businesses start to realise how they can be used for collaboration within their organisation and with customers.

A couple years ago, big names in tech and business were rushing to capitalise on Second Life's popularity by building 'islands' and headquarters in the virtual world - or using it to sell products in a novel way.

But the UC-Logic (http://www.uc-logic.com/products/products_wp5540-tab1l.htm) tablet is not in the list and getting a driver and making it work is what we do here.

Voting ended by 5pm, and only 7 minutes after that, one city (called Ibiam) already had their full results. Just some 20 hours after that, every brazilian city - including those few, far deep in the rain forest - know the name of their new mayor and councillors, who will take office for the 2009-2012 term.

Connecting my opensuse 11 with Wireless LAN adapter Safecom SWMULZ-5400

Linux, GNU, Open-sourceA few weeks ago, because I knew that I would be frequently on the move, I decided to buy an adapter to connect a wifi router. I did not take too much time to select one guaranteed to work on linux, and after a quick look on Amazon bought a SWMULZ-5400 based on a chipset Zydas 1211B. One of the best selling point for the naive guy that I am, was the support for Linux with a driver available. Well this was just marketing propaganda. There was no support and the driver that can be downloaded from the Safecom website is unusable.
http://safecom.cn/code/sub/category.asp?prdid=321&subcatid=41

Fortunately after some tweaking and using the zd1211rw module whic h is now included in the 2.6.25 kernel, and includes both drivers for 1211 and 1211B, I could connect by wifi. Here are the steps I followed, probably not the best method, but keep in mind that I am no wireless expert.
